Jersey Chamber announces student bursary on 250th anniversary

Tuesday 23 October 2018

The Jersey Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 250th anniversary this year, and is marking the milestone by launching an annual bursary for local students.

Details of the scheme are still to be released, but Chamber CEO Murray Norton announced at a gala dinner this weekend that Chamber already has £10,000 of funding for it.

Speaking at the 250th anniversary event, held at the Royal Jersey Showground in Trinity with 530 Chamber Members in attendance, Mr Norton said: "I am thrilled to introduce the Jersey Chamber Bursary that we will be providing annually, to local students who will be our next commercial captains and industry leaders. We announced this with funding of the first £5,000 and one of our event sponsors Grant Thornton matched that, so we are now in an excellent position to roll out the scheme."

The event also marked the delivery of a special message from Her Majesty The Queen, presented by the Lieutenant Governor, Sir Stephen Dalton, to Eliot Lincoln, the Chamber's President.

In her message, Her Majesty expressed her interest and appreciation of the work of the Chamber over its 250 years of existence. She wrote: "Please convey my warm thanks to the Members of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce for their loyal greetings, sent on the occasion of the 250th Anniversary of their founding which is being celebrated this year

"As your Patron, I was interested to learn of the contribution made by the organisation to promote trade and commerce across the island and your continuing support to businesses in Jersey and their success both nationally and internationally."

Mr Lincoln said: “What an amazing and supportive message from The Queen. It really highlights the place that the Chamber of Commerce has in British history and to get a message of thanks like this has left me almost speechless.

“The amount of effort that goes into Chamber is truly staggering. Special thanks must go to our Executive Committee and other Committee members who give their time on an honorary basis. But the organisation couldn’t function without our Executive so I want to say a personal thanks to Murray and Helen who do such an amazing job and who organised the entire Gala event”

Mr Norton added: “What an honour to receive such a message. The Jersey Chamber of Commerce is such an important organisation and running it is a real honour. Last night’s celebration was really made special by this letter from The Queen.”
