High street struggles to be discussed in Jersey's first 'Retail Summit'

Wednesday 06 March 2019

Local retailers, government representatives and leaders of British retail will this month all unite in one room to discuss the retail sector's trends and challenges facing their sector.

Organised by the Chamber of Commerce, Jersey's first ever Retail Summit, which is taking place on 22 March ahead of the release of the Retail Strategy, aims to understand the future trends of retail and discuss how both Government and retailers can work together to secure that future in Jersey.

It will include keynote addresses from Helen Dickinson, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium and Peter Cowgill, Chief Executive of JD Sports.

Senator Lyndon Farnham, the Minister for Economic Development, Tourism, Sport and Culture, will also speak, as well as Katherine Salt from Plums Lingerie, Daphne East, the Two Manager and Eliot Lincoln, the Chamber's President.

The event comes among difficult times for high street shops, who have been pushing for all goods bought online to include GST.

Eliot Lincoln, President, said Chamber was delighted to host the summit. “This is a superb opportunity for island retailers and all interested parties to come together, to learn about the long-awaited Government Retail Strategy and give feedback to the Minister," he said.

"We are also hearing from two of the most influential people in British retail, Helen Dickinson OBE, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium and Peter Cowgill, Executive Chairman of JD Sports. The retail knowledge and track record of success from these two leading retailers, will be invaluable to all who attend.

"The Chamber of Commerce has been representing retailers for two hundred and fifty one years, and our mission is to bring all relevant parties together to discuss and meet the challenges of the current retail climate for the benefit of Jersey."
