The Law Society of Jersey has named Julie Harrigan, Associate at Collas Crill, as the winner of its Junior Lawyer of the Year Award 2016.
Miss Harrigan joined Collas Crill nine years ago as a legal assistant and qualified as a Jersey solicitor in December 2014.
She specialises in all aspects of succession law and advises on, and drafts, wills for local and non-local clients as well as HNW individuals. She also deals with the administration of deceased's estates for local and non-local clients and assists individuals with the probate process in Jersey.
The Junior Lawyer of the Year award is given by the Law Society of Jersey and is designed to recognise excellence amongst members of the society who have been qualified for less than three years.
Advocate Jonathan Speck, President of The Law Society of Jersey, said: “It is important that we encourage and support the junior members of our profession and recognise those who stand out.”
“Having come up through the ranks of her firm before qualifying as a Jersey Solicitor two years ago, Julie has made a material impact in her practice area and, in particular, has been instrumental in bringing about changes to Jersey’s succession laws, having identified an important issue during the course of her client work. In addition, Julie is now sharing her knowledge in the field of succession as an adjunct professor on the Jersey Law Course.”
In addition to her focus on succession law, Miss Harrigan regularly advises on mental capacity issues, including Jersey curatorships and the registration of foreign powers of attorney/guardianship orders in Jersey. She also advises on and assists with the creation of tutelles for local clients.
A highlight of Miss Harrigan's career so far has included prompting the commissioning of a report into Jersey's succession laws surrounding the inability of a physically disabled person being able to sign a will in the Island. This report has been submitted to the legislative panel and, as a result, changes to Jersey's succession laws are due to follow.

This is the second time that a lawyer from Collas Crill has won this award with senior associate Simon Hurry receiving the accolade in 2015. He is now based in the firm's Cayman office.
