Company launches service to support dementia sufferers

Tuesday 23 August 2016

A Jersey health care company is expanding its services to help dementia and Alzheimer's patients living in the Island.

The LV Care Group's known as ‘L.I.N.C.’ (Living In a Networked Community), works with Islanders who suffer from dementia helping them to lead a fulfilling life and stay in their own home, with the safety and support of highly trained professionals.

It is predicted that between 2010 and 2040 the numbers of residents over 65 will rise by 95% and the increase in people living longer is also likely to see an increase in the number of people living with dementia.

Health's Mental Health Strategy predicts that the number of over 65 year olds suffering from dementia in Jersey will increase from 1,147 people in 2010 to 2,347 people by 2030 and the company says this is a staggering 104% increase that is creating a surge in the demand for health and social care services.

LV Care Group says thanks to the launch of L.I.N.C., it is working towards meeting this demand whilst elevating the level of service provided.

The company offers a full suite of dementia care services that are available around the clock and are tailored to each individual’s requirements. From day and night services, to domestic support, health care and medication support.

Dementia is classified as a major neurocognitive disorder because it interferes with both cognitive function and performing everyday activities. This includes memory, speech, language, judgment, reasoning, planning and other thinking abilities. This can inhibit many everyday activities, including making meals, paying bills and traveling to a store to make a purchase.

Studies have consistently shown that active management of dementia can improve quality of life for individuals. L.I.N.C. have developed extensive connections with charities, businesses, community programs and highly qualified, dementia-specific professional carers to design a support program that enriches quality of life whilst also ensuring the individual is cared for and safe.

Their connections with local charities such as Jersey Alzheimer’s Association, Maison Des Landes and Good Companions Club means they are able to provide a network of support and a variety of daily activities that will encourage cognitive stimulation, engagement and social interaction in the community.

L.I.N.C. Manager Edgar Dingle said: "L.I.N.C. has been designed to create a network within our community that provides a specialist support system for individuals suffering from dementia. It’s not about one company, it’s about combining some of the most highly trained professionals in dementia care with charities, businesses and specialist services.

"We will be able to care for dementia sufferers in the comfort of their home which is so important during what can be a very complex and troublesome period. We also want to make sure that clients have the freedom to take part in activities and social engagements.

"There can be many restrictions surrounding dementia and we are here to ensure that everyday tasks are achievable, as well as any extra activities that our clients might like to take part in. I want to thank Jersey Alzheimer’s Association, Maison Des Landes and Good Companions Club for working with us and ensuring that our clients have access to the best possible services.

"We are looking after some of the most vulnerable people in our society and working on the future of dementia care in Jersey. With the condition affecting more and more of us every day, it’s important that we act now and raise the standards across the industry."
