Forum seeks views on minimum wage

Thursday 28 May 2015

The Employment Forum is reviewing what hourly rate the minimum wage should be set at from April next year and wants to hear from stakeholders.

The minimum wage is currently £6.78 per hour - higher than the UK and Guernsey rates of £6.50 per hour, but lower than the UK Living Wage rates of £9.15 per hour in London, and £7.85 in the rest of the country.

Helen Ruelle, Chair of the Employment Forum, said: “As always, it is important that we hear from employers who pay the minimum wage as well as minimum wage earners.

"We are also asking businesses what circumstances might allow them to tolerate bigger or quicker minimum wage increases in the future. The Forum is an independent body that plays an important role trying to find a balance that is right for Jersey. We base this on consultation with stakeholders, the latest statistics, as well as advice about the local economy.”

Over the next two months, the Forum will receive comments from a range of stakeholders including representatives of employers and employees. The Forum will then consider all of the responses that it has received, along with the latest statistics and economic advice, before making a recommendation to the Minister for Social Security.  The Minister will then consider the Forum’s recommendations and propose any necessary changes to the minimum wage law.

The survey is available online.

Copies can also be obtained by emailing E.Forum@gov.je, telephoning 447203, or by collection from the Social Security Department reception desk.

Respondents may also request a meeting with the Forum. The review closes on 22 July 2015.
