A local charity has launched a new scheme to help make recycling easier for local businesses.
It'll see the Les Amis Recycling Team collect recyclable goods from businesses and offices on a weekly basis.
An investment from the Association of Jersey Charities last year helped make the initiative a reality. With the money donated, Les Amis were able to purchase a van and now they are up and running a raring to go green.
Les Amis, which opened at Five Oaks in 1975, provides essential services to meet the needs of those with learning disabilities – including Down’s syndrome and autism - and/or associated conditions.
Shaun Findlay, Managing Director of Les Amis, said: “The more businesses that sign up, the cheaper the collections will be and we hope to charge just £5 a week for the complete removal of recyclables. This is a not-for-profit initiative and the money is solely to cover our running costs, which includes paying our team of learning disabled adults for their time and effort.”
The charity says that organisations who sign up for the service would be a step closer to fulfilling their corporate social responsibility and would also be helping a local charity to develop job opportunities that enable vulnerable adults to engage in meaningful activities which benefit the community.
By using the Les Amis Recycling Team, companies will also be supporting the States of Jersey’s recycling target. The concept of the ‘more we collect, the cheaper it gets’ is intended to encourage a green approach to recycling in Jersey.
In 2015 Les Amis was named Not-for-Profit Organisation of the Year at the Jersey Business Awards for Enterprise and Large Charity of the Year at the Association of Jersey Charities Awards.
