Island explores links with Netherlands

Tuesday 23 July 2019

Government officials have met with the Dutch Ambassador to discuss developing links between Jersey and the Netherlands.

The Dutch Ambassador, His Excellency Simon Smits, made his first official visit to the island last week and met the Minister for External Relations.

Mr Smits also discussed Jersey’s position in relation to Brexit, as well as financial services and tax matters with Senator Ian Gorst.

During his time in the island, Mr Smits visited Jersey Finance to learn about Jersey’s role as an international finance centre, and attended a meeting with the Jersey Financial Services Commission.

He also met members of the island’s Dutch community at a special drinks reception hosted at Jersey Zoo.

The Minister for External Relations, Senator Ian Gorst, described the Ambassador's visit as a "great pleasure" and an "important opportunity to discuss how we can continue to enhance and develop the links between Jersey and the Netherlands, as well as allowing us to emphasise our commitment to protecting the interests of Jersey’s Dutch community.”
