Islander to run "toughest footrace on Earth"

Thursday 19 February 2015

Stuart Pinnington, Group Head of Institutional Services at JTC, will be partaking in the Marathon Des Sables in Morocco, also known as ‘the toughest footrace on Earth’, this April to raise funds for a charity supporting disabled children and their families in the UK.

In order to complete the Marathon Des Sables, Mr Pinnington will need to conquer a course distance of 250km over seven days in the Sahara Desert, a feat that amounts to running a total of six full marathons in 40-50°C heat within the space of a week. The challenge is also a "self-sufficient" marathon meaning that competitors have to carry everything they need, except water, for the week on their backs.

He will be racing in the company of similarly motivated individuals from around the world, including the legendary explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is aiming to complete the marathon and add it to his long list of accomplishments.

Mr Pinnington will be running to raise money for the Caudwell Children charity (www.caudwellchildren.com) which aims to provide family support services, equipment, treatment, and therapies for disabled children and their families across the UK. The organisation also runs a programme for talented disabled athletes and holiday scheme for children fighting life threatening conditions.

He said: “Fitness has always played a massive part in my life and will continue to do so for as long as I can compete. Many children and their families are not so lucky, however, and for one reason or another, do not have the opportunity or capacity to take part in sports like we all can. This is why I decided to raise funds for such a fantastic charity in Caudwell Children. I firmly share the values we all live by here at JTC and believe that giving back to the community, in creative and innovative ways, to ensure a successful future for all is absolutely vital. Hopefully by completing this challenge I will be able to make a difference in some children’s lives so that they can achieve their own future aspirations and enjoy sport as much as I do.”
