Jersey Estate Agents' Association now represents most of industry

Wednesday 30 December 2015

The Jersey Estate Agents' Association has signed up its 17th estate agency - and now represents the majority of Jersey's Estate Agents.

Jersey has 33 Active Estate Agencies, 17 of which are signed up to the JEAA.

The Jersey Estate Agents’ Association was established in 1965 to provide a structure for its members to follow, in order to encourage best practice and to safeguard its customers – this comes in the form of Codes of Practices. The Association is still going strong today and as it is celebrating its 50th year, another major milestone.

The past year has been very busy for the JEAA whom have been working very hard at forming links with other associations within the property Industry. Over the next few months every agency in the JEAA will now become a member of the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA), which is the leading national body for estate agents.

Members of the JEAA will also become a member of The Property Ombudsman – a national redress scheme which gives customers peace of mind that member agents follow a code of practice and have up to date knowledge through regular Continuing Professional Development from trainers from the mainland.

Whilst there are no specific laws regulating Jersey estate agents, they are nevertheless required to be registered with the Jersey Financial Services Commission as a specified Schedule 2 business under the Proceeds of Crime (Supervisory Bodies) (Jersey) Law 2008 and are required to collect customer due diligence in accordance with the Money Laundering (Jersey) Order 2008. Therefore, using an estate agent which is part of the JEAA association will provide customers with comfort that the agent operates from a code of practice in their everyday operation.

The JEAA emphasise that their members work for the vendor in the case of a sale, and the landlord in the case of a rental.

John Quemard, President of Jersey Estate Agents Association, said: “The JEAA have enjoyed their 50th anniversary this year since first established back in 1965. To mark the anniversary, we have strengthened our relationships with the NAEA, The Property Ombudsman and many other local professionals within the property industry. As an Association we now represent 17 estate agencies with the number expected to grow even further throughout 2016.

“Property is one of the biggest investments a person is likely to make – it makes sense for the public to select an agent that follows best practice. The Jersey Estate Agents’ Association is committed to raising the standards in estate agency with the NAEA within Jersey. ”
