Derek Hairon, from Jersey Kayak Adventures, has become one of the first nationally endorsed British Canoeing guides in Jersey.
The guide endorsement recognises the additional skills required when fulfilling a guiding role on sea kayak tours and expeditions worldwide.
During the process to become an endorsed kayak guide candidates undergo training in key areas, including Camp Craft and Expedition Skills, Environment and Sustainability, Leadership, Customer Experience, Trip Planning and Organisation. Guides must also have paddle-sport leadership qualifications and submit a detailed portfolio of their guiding experience.
Derek Hairon said: "Achieving this award keeps us ahead of the game as client expectations continuously evolve. This is a great way to promote our expertise and experience to visitors and locals."
His experience and qualifications allow Jersey Kayak Adventures to market training courses for local and overseas sea kayakers to become British Canoeing endorsed kayak guides. The business say they are already seeing an increase in clients coming to Jersey to develop their advanced kayaking and leadership skills.
