Jersey set for enterprising week in May

Wednesday 23 March 2016

The 2016 Enterprise Week arranged and coordinated by Jersey Business will provide five days of thought provoking and practical debate on the key issues facing the Island’s business leaders, entrepreneurs and Government.

The week will be launched by Dr Matt Pope of UCL who has led the three-year Ice Age Jersey project and will explain how Jersey’s cultural and industrial past can inform its vision for the future.

This and subsequent sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to directly influence the States of Jersey’s long term vision.

Other topics to be discussed during the week will cover the changing face of the retail industry and the online/offline conundrum facing the sector; the impact that simple technology solutions can have on business performance; new opportunities for hospitality businesses to present themselves to external markets and trading partners and a chance for entrepreneurs to get involved in a ‘condensed boot camp’ during which they will develop a pitch for their business.

The forums and events will feature local and visiting experts and are open sessions. Jersey Business hopes the accessibility and diversity of the debate will provide stimulus for practical outputs and direct influence on the future of enterprise in Jersey. Everyone involved will hear about the opportunities that exist to grow their own businesses and the Jersey economy through higher productivity, growth opportunities and improved technical skills.

Chief Executive Graeme Smith said: “We have much to be proud of in Jersey about the resilience, flexibility and product innovation of the Island’s business community. It may seem odd to start a week about the future of enterprise by looking back to the Ice Age but we think people will be surprised to discover how the skills and adaptability of those early settlers to overcome the hardships and seize the opportunities of that time can still be seen in our modern day business leaders. We have a terrific line up for this year’s Enterprise Week and we are confident those who attend the events will come away enthused and informed.”

Minister of Economic Development, Tourism, Sport & Culture, Senator Lyndon Farnham said: "Jersey Business has developed an exceptional programme of events during Enterprise Week. This is particularly important at this time, as the States of Jersey start an island wide consultation to develop a long term vision for the island. The sessions that will take place during Enterprise Week will allow business leaders to input into the long term future for enterprise in Jersey as well as gaining specific knowledge and ideas to take their own businesses forward. This is a unique opportunity, not to be missed, for our business community to come together, learn together and add their voice to the conversation."

Enterprise Week starts on Friday 13th May and runs until Friday 20th May.
