Island's first 'Internet of Things' lab launches

Thursday 31 January 2019

Jersey’s first technology space and research centre dedicated to the latest digital innovations has officially opened.

It is hoped that the the Digital Jersey Xchange - or DJX - will help position Jersey as a testbed for entrepreneurs, start-ups and established businesses to research, develop, test and launch their digital products and services.

A key focus of the lab will be to exploit the opportunities afforded by the growth of internet-enabled devices, known as the Internet of Things (IoT).

Digital Jersey received £449,000 of funding from the States to set up the lab at JT's exchange at Red Houses

Digital Jersey said the lab will provide a strong launchpad for Jersey as a world-class technology and IoT testbed, and is a key tool in their off-Island campaign Sandbox Jersey, which aims to promote Jersey as a straight-forward place to research, develop, test, and launch a digital product or business.

Tony Moretta, Digital Jersey CEO, said: "The launch of the Digital Jersey Xchange marks the next phase in our work to position Jersey as a digital pioneer.

"Word is spreading globally about our attractiveness as a testbed for innovation. Having a physical space where that groundbreaking work can flourish only enhances our reputation and helps us speed up that work.’

Through Digital Jersey’s partnership with University College London, the Island will host student IoT researchers, contribute to the global academic dialogue on the Internet of Things and have access to the best minds working in the UK on IoT technology and solutions.

You can take a virtual look at the new lab online.
