A delegation from Jersey recently travelled to South Africa to promote the Island at one of the world’s largest mining industry events.

It was the second time Locate Jersey has attended the Mining Indaba Conference, with this year’s party including representatives from Jersey Finance, Ogier, Crestbridge, Carey Olsen, Alex Picot, Hatstone also attended, including Randgold Resources, Amlib Holdings, Centamin, Lydian International and Bellzone.

Now in its 20th year, Mining Indaba is the world’s largest mining investment conference and Africa’s largest mining event. It regularly attracts more than 7,000 attendees from almost 2,000 companies and more than 100 countries and territories.

There are currently nine mining companies in Jersey with a significant management and executive presence. They are involved in exploration, development and processing of a range of minerals including gold, manganese ore, iron ore, nickel, copper, oil, and gas, with sites ranging from Armenia, Georgia, Russia and the Middle East, to Ghana, Papua New Guinea, Australia, the USA and New Zealand.

Wayne Gallichan director of inward investment with Locate Jersey, said: “The mining industry is a highly competitive one, but feedback from this conference has confirmed our belief that Jersey has an excellent reputation in the sector compared to other jurisdictions. The quality of those mining professionals we spoke to was extremely high, and some of the Jersey delegation have already reported tangible business leads following on from our attendance at this conference.”
