Liberation Group commemorates 70 years of freedom

Tuesday 28 April 2015

The Liberation Group is marking a unique day in British history with a specially designed label and point of sale material for its award-winning Liberation Ale.

Seventy years ago on 9th May 1945, the Channel Islands were liberated from five years of Nazi occupation, having been the only British soil to fall to Hitler's German army during World War II.

The Islands will be celebrating the historic date with a host of special events and to mark the occasion Liberation Group is paying its own tribute to the Islanders who faced significant hardship from 1940 to 1945 and to the liberating forces who finally set them free.

The design reflects the scenes of celebration that were experienced across the Channel Islands on May 9th when wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill announced on the BBC, “…and our dear Channel Islands are also to be freed today”. The label shows members of the liberating forces joining with Islanders to cheer the announcement, which is what they will be doing again 70 years on as they enjoy a public holiday.

Mark Crowther, Chief Executive of The Liberation Group said: “We are very aware of the importance of our name, and the feelings liberation stimulates in Islanders young and old. The Occupation was an important part of our history and we have all grown up knowing the value of our freedom.

“May 9th is a very special day in our calendar and the 70th anniversary is an incredibly significant occasion. It is fitting for us, with our heritage, to mark it in this way.”

The Liberation Brewery, which produces Liberation Ale, is one of the oldest in the British Isles and continued throughout the Occupation to brew the famous Mary Ann ale, which is still available today.
