New JFSC chief to be appointed by end of year

Friday 28 September 2018

A new Director General will be in place at the Jersey Financial Services Commission by the end of the year, it has been confirmed.

Applications for the position of Director General of the Jersey Financial Services Commission (JFSC) are now closed and the JFSC has confirmed an appointment should be made before the end of the year.

John Harris stepped down from his role earlier this year, citing stress and the risk of "burnout" for his decision after 12 years in the post.

Breaking the news, the JFSC published an unusually detailed statement on what was a personal issue, saying that Mr Harris had already had time off twice this year to manage "stress-related concerns" and so had decided to retire in order to prevent more serious health problems in the future.

The recruitment process to replace Mr Harris started in early August with the role being advertised both locally and overseas. The JFSC said they received "a substantial number of applications", adding that recruitment firm Odgers Berndston will oversee the shortlisting and assessment of the candidates prior to interview.

They added: "We continue to work closely with the Jersey Appointments Commission (JAC) as part of this recruitment process and a JAC representative will sit on the interview panel, alongside select members of the JFSC Board of Commissioners and an independent panellist, who has significant experience in financial regulation.

"We hope to have appointed the next Director General by the end of the year."
