New stores added to food waste app

Iceland and Checkers Xpress have joined a mobile food app that aims to reduce food waste.

Gander was launched in the Channel Islands in July and is now available in 39 stores across Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney.

The app works by displaying a store’s 'reduced to clear' food in real time, pushing the food onto the app as soon as it is stickered in-store. Once an item is bought, it is removed from the app, creating a constant news stream of what reduced items are currently available to buy.

Ashley Osborne, co-founder of Gander, said the app had been downloaded onto almost 7,000 smartphones in just over one month after being launched in the Channel Islands.

"The Morrisons Daily trial went very well over the summer so we’re delighted to extend the Gander app and its cost savings to more local shoppers through Iceland, Checkers Xpress and Le Cocq’s Stores from this month," Mike Rutter, SandpiperCI’s Retail Managing Director, said.

"We know many Islanders are keen to help tackle environmental problems from avoidable food waste so the Gander app is a great addition for us.”
