‘Pound Power’ lands in Jersey today

A new bargain basement store is to open in Jersey today as ‘Pound Power’ comes to St Helier.

The store will open in Liberty Wharf, while another Pound Power will welcome shoppers in Guernsey the following day.

The new stores have led to eight full-time jobs and will offer more than 1,200 shopping items, including non-branded toiletries, household goods, stationery, cleaning, car-care, luggage, food and non-food items.

SandpiperCI Chief Executive Tony O’Neill said: “Due to the contacts we have made through our successful Iceland stores, we have established strong links with UK value manufacturers who supply products to the main discount brands.

“Iceland is predominantly a food retail shop and we simply don’t have enough room for other variety value products, which is why we’ve decided to open stand-alone stores in each island.

“We are being offered both food and non-food merchandise so it made sense to create the new Pound Power brand to make these products available to our customers.”

Variety value stores have become increasingly popular since the recession began in 2008.

Luxury fashion stores Flannels and Next are soon to open, while Jersey’s oldest store, de Gruchy, has recently undergone a significant £18m re-development.
