Purrfectly Pawsome Treats from Grainville have won the Overall Award in the Jersey Student Business Challenge in recognition of the work they did to set up and run their business selling treats for cats, dogs, birds and humans.

Sweet Surprise from JCG was the runner up for the Overall Award.

The Jersey Student Business Challenge involved 20 teams of students from JCG and Grainville working with mentors from corporate partners at Barclays, EY and Ogier to create and run a business over a two month period. Additional awards were presented to the team demonstrating best use of Social Media, and also to teams in both JCG and Grainville for generating the most profit and benefiting the wider community.

Each team was given a loan of £100 to start their business. The 20 teams collectively made an overall net profit of more than £5,000 and have donated over £3,000 to local charities including the JSPCA, Jersey Hospice and the Oscar Maclean Foundation.

Nick Kershaw of Ogier said: “The amount of profit the teams have made is a testament to their hard work and commitment and the students should be very proud of themselves.” He added, “It is inspiring to see students wanting to give their hard earned profits to local charities. We are very pleased that this Challenge has not only helped students develop key employability skills but has also benefitted local charities to such an extent.”

Managing Director of Barclays, Channel Islands, Paul Savery said: “This year’s Challenge has been very successful. The judges were impressed by the teams’ creative ideas, their demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit as well as the time and effort they have put into ensuring that they have viable businesses.”

Mark Evans from Webreality said: “The teams were challenged to make good business use of social media and as a result they have used Facebook and Instagram to generate sales and showcase their products.”

Andrew Dann, CI Managing Partner of EY said: “The students who participated in this year’s Jersey Student Business Challenge have been on a steep learning curve. They have developed their teamwork, financial understanding and started to develop key business skills which will stand them in excellent stead as they move into employment. The schools and mentors have provided a great level of support and helped to ensure that the Challenge has been successful.”
