Ravenscroft brings horse racing personalities to Race Club Derby

Thursday 23 July 2015

The greatest staying hurdler in racing history, Big Buck’s, and his trainer, Paul Nicholls, will be guests at this weekend’s Jersey Derby at Les Landes racecourse.

Ravenscroft, one of the Jersey Race Club sponsors, is also bringing Matt Chapman, presenter of At The Races, to the event.

Retired in 2014, Big Buck’s is a four time consecutive winner of the Cheltenham World Hurdles races, making him the most successful staying hurdler; the horse also won 18 consecutive top class races breaking the world record. Big Buck’s is owned by Ravenscroft’s Chairman Andy Stewart.

Mr Nicholls, who is the current top National Hunt trainer, has worked with some of the most successful horses in recent years. As well as Big Buck’s, he has trained See More Business, Kauto Star, Denman and Cenkos, achieving success and setting the standard for jump racing. He has been crowned British racing jump champion trainer nine times during his career.

Popular presenter Mr Chapman spent eight years as a journalist on the Racing Post and four years with the Racing Channel before joining At The Races. Mr Chapman will actually be covering the race meeting for At The Races which will be aired on Sky television.

Haydn Taylor, chief executive officer of Ravenscroft Jersey, said: "Ravenscroft is delighted to bring these well-known personalities from the horseracing world to Jersey. This will be Paul and Matt’s first visit to Les Landes and I’m sure they will enjoy our quality racecourse. Big Buck’s will be paraded during the event, and it’s fantastic to welcome him back to the Island."

The first race starts at 2.30pm on Sunday, with the final race at 4.50pm.
