Some real Grand Designs coming to Jersey architecture festival

Thursday 03 September 2015

Six internationally-acclaimed architects shortlisted for one of the biggest awards in the profession will present their designs at a free event in Jersey as part of the 2015 Architecture Biennale.

The event is one of the highlights of the week-long festival of architecture.

And securing the six finalists for the Royal Institute of British Architects prize is a real coup for the event, which runs from 14 to 18 September.

The president of the Association of Jersey Architects, Derek Mason, said: “This really is a big deal for Jersey and puts the Island, not only on the national map, but very much in the international spotlight.

“There has been even more interest since it was confirmed that RIBA president Stephen Hodder would be curator for the day.”

The full programme includes guided walks, building tours, presentations, a Vin d’Honneur at the Town Hall and the 2015 Jersey Architecture Design Awards exhibition at CCA Galleries in Hill Street.

This will showcase the record 79 entries and the winners will be celebrated at the gala awards dinner on Friday 18 September, at which the results will be announced and presentations of trophies and certificates made. The week also encompasses a design challenge for schools.

The presentations lined up include “Financing the Shard”, being staged by the Economic Development department, outlining the part Jersey played in making the landmark London structure become a reality.

Some light may also be thrown on the mysteries of how the planning system works with the Planning department hosting ‘Celebrating 50 years of Planning in Jersey’.

There is a global feel to the event that will shine through during a presentation on how the capital city of Brazil came to be designed the way it is. ‘Brasilia – Blank Canvas’ is a lunchtime event at CCA Galleries with complimentary drinks and canapés on Thursday 17 September.

Out of town, Les Ormes sports and activity resort will be the venue for a building tour on Wednesday 16 September while the St Helier Waterfront will feature in a guided walk as will the ‘Fort and Port of St Helier.

All of the events apart from the gala dinner are free to attend but tickets have to be reserved online.
