State Street “DIY” makeover at Durrell

Wednesday 23 April 2014

The gorilla enclosure at Durrell is being revamped with a little help from the wildlife conservation trust’s friends from State Street.

A work party comprising 18 members of staff recently donned overalls for a day to paint a four-metre high wall. Fortunately, the gorillas were secure in their indoor enclosure, no doubt watching the proceedings with great interest. Prior to their spot of unusual DIY, State Street had rasied funds to cover the costs of materials.

When the renovation project is complete, the revamped enclosure will include an elaborate new climbing structure as well as several new planted areas for the gorillas to explore.

Stephanie Moore, corporate relations at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, said: “We are thrilled that State Street has been able to do this for the trust. It is a vital part of the improvement plan for the gorilla enclosure and we were overwhelmed by the fund raising efforts undertaken by the State Street employees even before they started on the painting itself. It is important that we provide a challenging and stimulating environment for our gorillas while improving the experience of the visiting public and State Street have really helped with this.”

Phil McGowan, Head of EMEA Private Equity & Real Estate Fund Services, State Street, said: "Durrell is something of a local institution and so when the opportunity to make a contribution arose, a number of staff volunteered their time to help. It fits well with our commitment to supporting the local community and we are delighted to have been a part of the project."
