"Unsung heroes of hospitality" recognised at inaugural H-oscars

Unsung heroes of hospitality were recently recognised at the inaugural Jersey Hospitality Association Awards, branded the ‘H-oscars’.

Winners included Maria Ivone de Brito (pictured), who received the Love Wine Career Achievement Award for her 45 years of dedication and service to the Modern Group.

She was described as a mother figure to all the staff with whom she is said to have an excellent rapport.

Patrick Burke of the Atlantic Hotel received the Visit Jersey Island Ambassador Award, for his work in promoting the island around the world, while Dom Emery of Kisbet Cabana picked up the GR8 Recruitment Best Newcomer Award.

The Easenmyne Student of the Year award went to Morgan Gilby, who works as a day porter at the Grand Jersey Hotel & Spa.

Seymour Hotels were awarded the Condor Ferries Green Award for showing "outstanding steps towards becoming more environmentally friendly".

“There is a new momentum at the JHA," commented JHA Chief Executive Officer Simon Soar.

"Yes, the industry faces challenges but we do so united and coordinated. Optimistic might be too strong a word but we certainly feel ready to stand up for ourselves and be heard. We have an engaged membership, our numbers are growing and we’re on a firm financial footing."

He continued: “Feeling energised and ready to share our fantastic story, it made sense to introduce the H-oscars to our end of season gala, which is itself a celebration of this great industry.

"The quality of submissions was outstanding, and I congratulate everyone who took part, including obviously the winners.”
