Visit demonstrates "Jersey's value as partner of choice" for Canada

Thursday 16 November 2023

Canada's High Commissioner "was able to see Jersey’s value as a partner of choice for trade and investment, and indeed more widely as a jurisdiction of excellence" during a recent visit, according to the island's External Relations Minister.

During his one-day trip, His Excellency the Honourable Ralph Goodale PC held meetings with Ministers, Jersey Overseas Aid and Digital Jersey, and also paid a trip to Jersey Archive to learn more about the Islanders who established themselves as early maritime traders with Canada.

He also met the Island’s Lieutenant-Governor, His Excellency Vice Admiral Jerry Kyd CBE, and Deputy Bailiff, Robert MacRae, to gain a deeper understanding Jersey’s constitutional position and its relationship with the British Crown and the Commonwealth.

The visit concluded with a reception hosted by the Royal Bank of Canada, where the High Commissioner met members of the business community with links to Canada.

"I am pleased to have had the chance to visit Jersey and learn more about the opportunities for cooperation with Canada. Our historical connections have established a firm foundation upon which we can build a modern, 21st century relationship focussed on shared prosperity and values," he commented.

External Relations Minister Philip Ozouf added: "We are delighted to welcome His Excellency to Jersey and continue building links with our firm friends in Canada. We share many common goals and historic ties, including a shared official language.
