As part of Jersey International Business School’s (JIBS) on-going programme of creating opportunities for wider learning and development, both professional and degree students will, this month, benefit from the expert industry knowledge of a leading economist.

ABN AMRO Bank’s chief economist Han de Jong, who is based in the private bank’s head office in Amsterdam, will be in Jersey on 21st November to present to 50 industry professionals on the global economic outlook. He will also conduct a session with 25 BSc (Hons) International Financial Services degree students, both first and second year, who are studying investments and the economy as part of their course.

Phil Harvey, ABN AMRO head of intermediary banking commented: ‘Han has a vast amount of financial knowledge and experience and is looking forward to sharing his market views and projections for the coming year with Jersey International Business School’s students. ABN AMRO is pleased to work with JIBS to create lively and interactive opportunities for students to discuss the key issues affecting the financial markets and encourage the students to think in a global context.

‘Five years after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, which triggered the sharpest economic downturn since the depression of the 1930s, the global economy is still looking subdued. Many countries have been hit by a sustained period of very weak growth or even outright recession for most of this period. However, economic indicators have started to improve across a wide range of countries. In his presentations to the JIBS students, Han de Jong will discuss the background to the crisis and the unprecedented policy response. He will focus on the healing process of the global economy and assess how far advanced that process is. Han is optimistic, and will argue that policymakers have avoided something much worse than what we are going through. He believes that the rebalancing of the global economy is well advanced, laying the foundation for a sustained recovery in the years ahead,’ added Mr Harvey.

Chris Usher, commercial director and senior lecturer at JIBS commented: ‘We are delighted to welcome such a highly respected and renowned economist to the business school. Han’s style and substance make this an event not to be missed by industry professionals and it will be a great learning experience for finance students’.

During his visit to the Channel Islands, Mr de Jong will also meet with a number of clients and intermediaries.
