Employees are quitting if not offered flexible working

As the world has adapted following the Covid pandemic it’s no surprise really that this has completely changed the landscape of work for employers and employees alike!

We have seen numerous articles over the last few weeks describing how the effects of the pandemic have changed people’s mentality towards work in terms of how they want to work, or if they even need to.  This is further evidenced by conversations we have had with clients who are recruiting to replace staff who have resigned without jobs to go to, or are taking early retirement.

We’re sure many people have given a lot of thought to this lately with regards to what the “right balance” means for them and their families (pets included!). As the pandemic forced many people to work from home for the first time, which may have been a concern at first, it seemed that people soon settled in to it and many found remote working a more efficient, productive way of working.  In the past, the willingness to adopt remote working was often met with the perception that it would cause unnecessary disruption, with many companies being reluctant to adopt this approach. However, if the last 18 months is anything to go by it can show just how adaptable employers and employees can be!

Whilst many might miss the social aspect of going to the office, it seems that many companies are adopting a flexible ‘hybrid’ working policy, where employees benefit from mixing their week between the office and home as suits them and their team best.  There has also been an enormous increase in the use of technologies such as Zoom and Teams which can help people to stay connected remotely to team members and clients, which although not everyone’s choice of how to communicate it certainly opens more possibilities.

We’re certainly experiencing interesting times in the workplace and it’s anyone’s guess to how things will look in a couple of years – will more people leave jobs where they are not offered some form of remote/hybrid working?  We are lucky enough to be working with many clients who are forward thinking, flexible employers that are on board with a new smarter way of working, however not all organisations are taking this approach and it’ll be fascinating to see how this plays out in terms of company performance and the ability to attract and most importantly retain talent.
