Employees from Jersey Electricity recently cycled the 3,052 kilometres to Finland to mark World Day for Safety and Health, raising nearly £2,000 for Mind Jersey.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work promotes the importance of having a safe and healthy work environment, with this year’s initiative focusing on mental health. Nearly £950 was donated during the cycle challenge, which JE matched to bring the total raised to just shy of £2,000.

Finland has been voted the happiest country in the world for six consecutive years, which made it the perfect destination for the cycling challenge.Three bikes were set up in the Powerhouse, with 80 JE employees joining in the challenge.

Mind Jersey delivered Mental Health Awareness sessions throughout the week for JE employees and also joined the cycling challenge to talk to Powerhouse customers about their work

Dr Patricia Tumelty, Executive Director of Mind Jersey, said: ‘Thanks so much to all at JE. This challenge showed what a great team spirit there is at JE, with so many employees cycling with gusto to support others in need. It feels fitting that Finland was the end destination, as a place renowned for caring and valuing people for what and who they are. All money raised will go towards valuing people in Jersey with long term mental health problems.’

JE Head of Health Safety and the Environment Ross Muir commented: ‘At JE, safety is a core vale; we have employees working on the Island’s energy network and their safety is paramount – as is their safety and wellbeing. We know that good mental health supports good safety. To mark World Day for Safety and Health, we wanted to raise awareness of how vital good mental health is by undertaking this cycling challenge to raise money and awareness for Mind Jersey in the process. This was a real team effort by JE employees throughout the week, coming together with great camaraderie to raise awareness for an important charity.’
