Liberation Management, a leading Channel Island’s trust company has, in conjunction with Appleby, one of the world’s largest offshore providers of legal services, advised on the world’s first registration of image rights by a fashion model.

Liberation Management and Appleby have together filed an application for the registration of the personality and image rights of London based Storm Models’ Megan Williams, who became the first fashion model to file an application for the registration of her image under Guernsey’s new 2012 Image Rights Law.

Williams, who spent her first few years in Guernsey and whose family is from the Island, has taken advantage of the Island’s new approach to image rights, which enables individuals, corporates and fictional characters to have their image legally registered and provides ownership of their associated image rights. The registration could now see other well-known fashion personalities protecting their image rights in the same manner.

Liberation Management’s managing director, David Rowlinson said: “It has been a pleasure working with Megan and The Storm Modelling Agency on this registration. Megan is doing incredibly well in the modelling world and has a bright future, this will help to enhance her image protection going forward“.

Appleby associate and registered image rights agent, Michael Richards said: “Megan’s image is integral to her work and is a growing source of her income as her career develops. In the light of the successful image protection case recently brought by singer Rihanna, it is increasingly important for famous people to protect their image and reputation. Guernsey’s innovative registration process serves as another layer of protection for controlling a personality’s brand and ensuring others do not profit from the unauthorised use of their image to sell products or services.”
