Four local charities have been awarded funding at the 2013 Barclays Community Awards event, held at the Pomme d’Or Hotel.
Four local charities have been awarded funding at the 2013 Barclays Community Awards event, held at the Pomme d’Or Hotel.
The winners were selected by a judging panel including Spencer Davies from Channel 103FM, Shaun Rankin, celebrity chef and owner of Ormer restaurant, Kathleen Britain, Head of Community Investment for Barclays and Paul Declat and Adele Langlois from Barclays in Jersey.
Community Savings Ltd have been awarded £5,000 to support their new ‘Money Management’ training project which aims to improve financial literacy. The project will feature short workshops for young people and other adult groups and explore behavior related to spending and budgeting.
Barclays awarded The Shelter Trust £7,500 to expand the use of the Young Person’s Outcomes Star, a specially designed measurement tool for assessing progress of young people across a range of key areas. The Trust will use the funding to provide more programmes to benefit young people in Jersey.
Words and Numbers Matter, a new charity to the island that aims to improve literacy and numeracy among 18-25 year olds, was awarded £4,000. The charity’s project ‘The Lab’ will support approximately 120 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds in gaining vital life and work skills.
Jersey Mencap received £7,500 for the charity’s Money Skills workshops which are aimed at young adults in Jersey with a learning disability and are planned to start in February 2014.
The money skills workshops will be fun, informative and relevant to everyday life skills such as money awareness, banking, budgeting and shopping. One of Mencap’s aims under this project is to show their members how to prepare meals within a budget. In support of this, Barclays has agreed to work with a local supermarket and Shaun Rankin has also agreed to support by inviting the charity to his restaurant, Ormer, to learn how to prepare and cook the meals.
The four awards demonstrate the new focus of this year’s Awards which aligns with Barclays’ global commitment to support young people through its community initiative ‘5 Million Young Futures’ which aims to develop the skills young people require in order to fulfill their potential.
“All four charities are fantastic causes that we are really thrilled to be supporting,” said Paul Declat, Jersey Director for Barclays Wealth and Investment Management.
“Our aims this year are to support young people in gaining key financial, entrepreneurial and employability skills and the projects reflect these goals. These projects will support the young people of Jersey in making a real difference to their lives.”
