Three Guernsey students are off to London to hear from a range of world leaders, opinion formers and global business figures including Sir Ranulph Fiennes OBE and David Miliband, thanks to an initiative set up by the Ana Leaf Foundation.

Post A-level students, Eden Francart from the Grammar School, Natalia Tanser from The Ladies’ College and Scott Bourgaize from Elizabeth College earned the all-expense-paid trip to London after winning the Ana Leaf Foundation’s 2014-2015 ‘Directors of Tomorrow’ competition.

The winning students will attend the Institute of Directors (IoD) Annual Convention at the Royal Albert Hall on 6 October. The theme this year is ‘‘Business Beyond Boundaries” and the convention will provide the students with the opportunity to meet and network with influential figures in the business world.

The ‘Directors of Tomorrow’ competition, now in its sixth year, invites ten local students, selected by teachers for their interest in current affairs, to attend the Guernsey IoD’s annual debate. Those students record their experience of the debate in blogs and the authors of the three best blogs are then invited to make the trip to London for the IoD’s annual convention.

This year’s convention will explore evolving business philosophies and emerging themes, the impact of major technological change, the future shape of boards, barriers to growth and future risks, Europe and the UK: What next?, the next era of growth and innovation.

The students will also get to hear from a number of individuals who have pushed boundaries in a variety of different ways in each of their respective businesses and will feature Lord Nigel Lawson and Lord Peter Mandelson take opposing corners of the ring for a debate on Britain’s EU membership.

Linda Johnson, vice-chairman of the Guernsey Institute of Directors who is joining the students on their trip, said:  “It will be a great opportunity for these students, our future leaders, to hear from a plethora of global business figures on the ever evolving business environment.

“All those speaking at the event have experienced change and evolution within their business environments and the trip aims to educate us on how we should be adapting to these changes.”

Hayley de Putron, trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and sponsor of the Directors of Tomorrow initiative, said: “The annual IoD convention is a rare opportunity to hear from global leaders.  I hope the students engage and take a lot away from this experience, particularly in their future studies and careers.”

The initiative will again be hosting ten students at this year’s Guernsey’s IoD Convention (formerly the debate) which takes place on Thursday 22 October. Celebrated economist and journalist Tim Harford is guest speaker at the event entitled “The Guernsey Time Bomb” which will focus on the key demographic issues facing the island.

The voice of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Guernsey-born broadcaster Sarah Montague, will return to moderate this year’s debate joining panellists Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, chairman of the IOD in Jersey and tax specialist Wendy Dorman, risk and capital management professional Mel Carvill, alternative finance entrepreneur Geoff Miller and accountant and chair of the Guernsey Youth Commission Jane St Pier.
