CHILDREN from Vale Primary School are helping to brighten up Vale Avenue by painting a poppy display to mark 100 years since the First World War.
The flowers have been painted on plywood boards, which will then be attached to scaffolding surrounding four houses owned by Guernsey Electricity which are currently empty and awaiting development. The plywood boards and the red paint for the poppies have kindly been donated by Norman Piette.
The idea was thought up by St Sampson’s resident Denise Cohu who wanted to organise the art project to commemorate the WW1 anniversary and thought the area in front of the scaffolding would be the perfect location.
“Poppies are a very recognisable symbol of remembrance and it’s important that children understand its meaning. I’m hoping through this project the children involved will always remember the soldiers who lost their lives for our freedom when they see a poppy,” said Denise Cohu from the Bridge floral group.
Alan Bates, managing director at Guernsey Electricity, said: “It’s great that the pupils from Vale Primary School have been able to get involved with this art project to help commemorate the 100-year anniversary of the First World War. We’re pleased that the scaffolding area is going to be put to good use and the poppies will really help to brighten the front of the properties.”
