Cyclists in this Sunday’s Rock to Rocque bike ride will be presented with a certificate especially designed for the event by 10-year-old Ruby Hynes (pictured left) who is in year five at St Martin’s school.

Pupils from across the island’s primary schools were invited to enter a certificate design competition organised by event sponsors Heritage and Les Bourgs Hospice, the charity which will benefit from funds raised by the bike ride. Ruby’s entry was selected as overall winner with Lucie Lambourne (year four, St Mary and St Michael, pictured right) and Eloise Gallienne (year three St Andrew’s) coming a close second and third respectively. All three received book tokens from the Heritage Group.

Trish de Carteret, fundraising administrator for Les Bourgs and one of the judges, said that it was a difficult decision:

‘We had some great entries again this year, making the judges’ job particularly tricky. Ruby’s design was bright, colourful and very carefully laid out. The certificate will reproduce really well and I am sure will prove a nice memento for everyone taking part.’

The annual bike ride, celebrating 21 years this year, has become a key event in the local fundraising calendar and last year attracted 1,050 cyclists raising a record £35,000 for the Hospice. This year, organisers are hoping for another great turnout:

‘The weather forecast for is pretty good for the event,’ said event organiser Mira Domaille. ‘I am sure we will have lots of entries on the day and people can pre-register online for the first time this year too. It’s a great day and a fantastic way of raising funds for such a worthy cause.’
