£1k grant for summer interns scrapped

Monday 18 January 2016

Cash for small companies and charities who take on interns for the summer is no longer available.

Careers Jersey have scrapped the £1,000 grant that was on offer to them last year and the year before for an eight-week placement.

The money is being used to help teenagers get apprenticeships and qualifications on the Trackers programme instead.

They’ve contacted employers to let them know and say they’ll still be promoting internships the same way – on their website and in regular e-newsletters to undergraduates and those who have just graduated.

Interns have to be paid at least the minimum wage and have to be given a job that will help them develop skills at an undergraduate level.

A States spokesperson said: "The scheme remains an opportunity for undergraduates to earn some extra money to support their studies, take on a role that complements their degree and allows them to make some good local connections for future local employment.

"In turn, employers gain as they can plan summer projects (which may not be possible within the normal work force) and have someone who has the right skill set to complete them. They also have a chance to ‘try out’ a possible future employee."
