The island's biggest-ever book sale has raised over £17,000 for a local guide dogs charity, with the leftover books heading to Ukraine to help children learning English.

Last weekend, more than 15,000 second-hand books were for sale at the Albert Bartlett building.

Held across two days, the book sale raised over £17,000 for the Jersey branch of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Organisers said that the remaining children's books were sent to children learning English in Ukraine, where “language books are difficult to get hold of and twice the usual price".

“We are so grateful to everyone who came and bought books or donated them throughout the year,” they added.

Ahead of the event, Branch Chairman Ken Syvret said the permanent shop at St Ouen that previously stored the charity’s extensive selection of books was full to overflowing – with military, art, gardening, cookery, and the Channel Islands among the categories most represented in the stock.

“It will be good to see the books disappear into the welcoming hands of the many supporters," he said.

"The Albert Bartlett building has proved to be a popular venue with easy access and plenty of parking, and we’re grateful to Albert Bartlett for its continuing support."
