Man who grabbed woman by throat changes plea just hours into trial

Tuesday 08 November 2022

A 28-year-old man has pleaded guilty to attacking a woman on two occasions - just hours after a trial for the offences began yesterday.

Mark John Bartlett admitted grabbing the woman by the throat, throwing her onto a bed and punching her in the face.

The assaults took place in March and April 2020.

Bartlett had been due to stand trial this week at the Royal Court charged with attacking the woman on nine different occasions that year, comprising six charges of common assault and three of grave and criminal assault.

He was also accused of malicious damage for allegedly smashing a glass door at the woman's home.

At the opening of the trial on Monday, he denied all the charges, and jurors were told that the case was likely to last at least five days.

But hours into the first day he changed his plea to two of the grave and criminal assault charges to guilty. Prosecutors decided not to proceed with the other charges.

He was released on bail to return to court on Friday 11 November.

Following the plea change, Investigating Officer Detective Constable Denis McGee said: “The victim in this case should be commended for her bravery and determination in seeing this through to the end.

"We want to assure victims that there are a number of agencies who are in a position to offer them support and guidance.”
