Tuesday 13 December 2022

The Government has confirmed details of how people can donate to the special fund set up by the Bailiff to support people affected by the tragic events in Jersey over the last week.

Lasting until 23 December, the Bailiff's Island Appeal will help islanders affected by the Pier Road explosion this weekend, as well as the loved ones of the fishers lost when their trawler collided with a Condor freight ship last week.

Donations to the Bailiff's Island Appeal can be made by bank transfer using the reference "Island Appeal" and the following details:

Bank: HSBC

Sort Code: 40-25-34

Account number: 91663933

IBAN: GB80MIDL40253491663933

An online payment form will be available shortly for card payments via the Government website.

If you do not have access to online banking, you can make donations in person using cash or cheques at Customer and Local Services, La Motte Street, St Helier.

The search for survivors at the site of the Pier Road explosion has come to a close, and has now moved to a recovery operation.

Police confirmed earlier today that at least seven islanders died in the suspected gas leak explosion, with two more still missing.

Yesterday, the names of seven islanders living in the Haut du Mont area who have not been seen since the explosion in the early hours of Saturday morning were released.

Among the first to donate to that fund on behalf of those affected by the Pier Road tragedy will be Richard Davy, who set up a JustGiving page on Saturday night and has since raised over £2,000.

Richard explained that he will be donating the full amount raised to the Bailiff's Appeal by covering the percentage taken by JustGiving out of his own pocket.

As well as helping those affected by yesterday's explosion, the Bailiff's Island appeal will also support the families impacted by the maritime tragedy earlier this week.

Fisherman Michael Michieli was one of three on board L’Ecume II as it collided with the 126m Commodore Goodwill en route from Guernsey on Thursday morning. His two crew, both from the Philippines, were named yesterday as Larry Simyunn and Jervis Baligat.

Extensive searches involving Jersey, Guernsey and French air and sea rescue authorities, as well as the wider fishing community, took place throughout Thursday and Friday but were eventually called off.

Police also confirmed today that two bodies have been found near the site of the fishing trawler L'Ecume II in St. Ouen's Bay.
