Big demand for new drop-in centre for recovering addicts

Thursday 24 March 2016

There's already big demand for a new community day programme helping Islanders with drug or alcohol addictions and it hasn't even been officially opened yet.

The drop-in centre in town run by Silkworth Lodge opened its doors last month and its already helped more than 150 Islanders with their recovery.

The latest figures show substance misuse is prevalent on the Island - alcohol consumption is double that of the UK and one of the highest in Europe and a recent drugs report shows that 1.4% of the Island's population aged 15-64 have substance misuse issues compared to 0.85% in the UK.

The charity has set up the programme to provide a safe and supportive environment focusing on a client-centred, collaborative approach to recovery, putting the individual at the centre of their journey.

It's running drop-in morning mornings and afternoons together with two groups a week which focus on Recovery Maintenance and an Alcohol Change Group.

Silkworth’s CEO Jason Wyse said: “I am overwhelmed by the initial response to the number of people that have accessed the service so early on in its existence. It clearly demonstrates the need for such an environment.

“The aim of this facility is to provide a space that can assist ongoing recovery for people that want help with their drug and/or alcohol addiction, but importantly we want it to grow to the point where The Club House will be a place for people that want recovery managed by a professional in the field, however supported by volunteers in recovery, thus building a healthy Recovery Community within the island.”

The centre in Rue De Funchal will be officially opened by the Health Minister Andrew Green next Thursday.
