"Rising costs" push bus fares up (again)

Wednesday 20 March 2024

LibertyBus has announced an increase in fares alongside its new timetable "due to rising costs and inflation", following similar increases made last year.

The company has confirmed its spring and summer timetable, which will be launched on Monday 25 March.

Changes to fares will also come into effect, which the company says are "due to rising costs and inflation".

New fares

The increase will affect pay-as-you-go, contactless, cash payments, and monthly passes.

The new fares will be:

* Pay As You Go: £2.00 (Adult) £1.10 (Children)
* Contactless: £2.35 (Adult) £1.12 (Children)
* Cash: £2.80 (Adult) and £1.40 (Children)

The previous fares were:
* Pay As You Go: £2 (Adult) £1.03 (Children)
* Contactless: £2.25 (Adult) £1.08 (Children)
* Cash: £2.70 (Adult) and £1.30 (Children)

The monthly bus pass - which can be renewed for £52 or - will increase by £5 per month.

LibertyBus said the increase brings the monthly pass to the same price as in 2012, working out to around £1.68 per day.

The operator announced fare increases this time last year, also citing "rising costs and inflation".

New routes and schedules

At the same time, the operator has also announced new routes and schedules, such as an early morning service and hourly service to Trinity, more buses to Plemont, and Corbière, and more frequent buses to the airport on Saturdays.

Route 4 now has an early morning service starting at 6:30 from Trinity to town.

A direct hourly service to Trinity, Route 4A, has also been introduced during the day.

Route 8 has been introduced on a Sunday to see if it will be viable to operate all year round. The route will be aligned with the first and last racing times at the Jersey Race Club at Les Landes.

From 27 May, the frequency of Route 12A will increase to half-hourly from Monday to Sunday until the end of August.

The 06:55 Route 12A to St Helier will be rebranded as Route X12 and will travel along the avenue into town

Route 14 to St Brelade's Bay will start again with an hourly frequency and increase to half hourly from 27 May.

On Saturdays, Route 15 will run every 15 minutes throughout the day to match the Monday-to-Friday frequency.
