Businesses manage to keep lights on during power cut

Thursday 19 October 2023

While St Helier residents were plunged into darkness on Tuesday night, some town businesses used birthday candles and phone torches to keep running during the power cut.

Jacques Tran, of Park House Thai Restaurant, said around 15 customers were in the restaurant at Colomberie when the lights went out.

Thankfully, most diners had been served their mains by then.

The power outage – which impacted 2,279 Jersey Electricity customers – began at 19:42 when one of the electricity company's safety protection devices was triggered due to what is believed to be a fault in an underground cable.

Affected areas spanned from Havre des Pas to Green Street and Roseville Street, and as far as Clarence Road and Mont Millais.

At Park House, Jacques said the lights were out for about an hour and a half in total.

However the Thai restaurant found a way to adapt and stayed open throughout the power cut, using alternative light sources to offer customers an atmospheric dinner experience.

"Mostly, we used candles from birthdays and mobile phone torches," explained Jacques. "Everybody has a mobile phone now."

He added that, in the absence of a functional card reader, customers had paid via bank transfer.

"Just two customers, a couple, haven't paid yet but we know them anyway!" Jacques said.

Just down the road, exercise enthusiasts at Carrefour Metro gym had the perfect excuse to end their workout early.

Around 20 customers who were present at the time of the power cut were asked to leave the gym to avoid tripping.

Manager James Walsh explained that the building's emergency lighting meant gym goers weren't left fumbling in the dark for their clothes.

"I think everyone understood," he said. "The gas was the whole island, and the power cut was the whole area!"

And the pizzaiolos of Pizzeria Famosa were also affected, posting an apology to Facebook.

Oh dear.. first no gas and now no electricity in this end of town," they wrote on social media. "Apologies to our customers tonight."

Jersey Electricity said yesterday that rapid response teams were promptly mobilised following the outage, and the first customers had their power restored by 20:20 on Tuesday night.

All remaining customers were fully restored by 21:52 – just over two hours after the lights went out.

Chris Ambler, CEO of Jersey Electricity, said yesterday: "We understand the significant inconvenience caused by power interruptions and sincerely apologise to all those affected.

"We are immensely grateful for the patience and understanding shown by our customers during last night's unexpected incident."

The electricity outage came little more than a week after an island-wide gas network shutdown affected roughly 4,000 households and 400 businesses. Supply was restored to most premises between Friday and Monday.

Earlier this month, St John was also affected by an electricity outage.
