Cadet graduates to firefighter!

Sunday 25 October 2015

Eighteen-year-old Daniel Whelan has become the first Jersey Fire Cadet to graduate to being an on-call firefighter.

Mr Whelan – who is heading to the University of Wolverhampton next year to do a fire and rescue degree – joined the cadets in 2012, but had to stop when he hit 18. He’s now a cadet leader with the group, and has recently qualified as an on-call firefighter with the Western Fire Station at Les Quennevais.

He has been congratulated by the Fire Chief, Mark James, who says that he hopes Mr Whelan’s example will be followed by some of the other cadets in the group.

He said: “This is a great moment for the Fire and Rescue Service but especially for the Fire and Rescue Cadet group.

“The fact that Firefighter Whelan has joined our service from the cadet group is testament to the value and worth of the group and the dedication of the team of volunteers that work with this fantastic group of young people.”

Mr Whelan – who was Cadet of the Year in 2014 – is currently studying health and social care at Highlands College.
