Café releases wish list to help set up new Hougue Bie base

Saturday 14 December 2019

Trays, racking, measuring jugs, trolleys and scales are just some of the items a café, which celebrates the skills of islanders with autism and other learning disabilities, has put on its Christmas wishlist.

The items will allow Beresford Street Kitchen (BSK) to get its new venue at La Hougue Bie up and running.

Run by the Aspire Charitable Trust, the café with a conscience was set up to provide opportunities for people with learning disabilities.

It opened in August 2017 to great acclaim and has been going from strength to strength since. Just under a year after it opened, the team nabbed the ‘Best Customer Service in Food & Drink’ at the Customer Service Awards.

In April 2018, the café branched out into printing with a dedicated workshop that gave 12 islanders with learning disabilities and autism the opportunity to train and learn new skills in the hope they will then be able to get employment in local companies.

Announced in October, the new venue will help the charity provide an additional 10,000 hours of crew training and employment. There are currently 45 islanders with learning disabilities working at BSK and the charity provides 39,000 hours of education, training and employment per year.

To get the new venue ready for opening next year, over £3,000 of kitchen items and appliances are needed, with price tags ranging from £6.26 to £692.99.

"We are very excited to be opening a new tea rooms at La Hougue Bie in January which will enable us to offer another 12 jobs, but will still have another 40 on our waiting list," Fundraising Manager Georgie Dodd explained.

"This year we decided to put a Christmas wish list together in hope that the community will help us purchase equipment and packages really needed to help us continue providing training and employment to all our crew with learning disabilities and autism."

In addition to the catering items, the charity is also hoping a charitable soul will buy software and devices to spruce up the printing workshop.

Anyone interested in helping can contact Georgie via email or call 07797 718299.
