Superhero challenge to help islanders with disabilities find their power

Sunday 21 March 2021

Islanders with disabilities are being invited to find their power in a new superhero-inspired challenge.

A partnership between Move More, the Government of Jersey and the UK Superhero Series, the challenge invites islanders of all ages to take part, free of charge, from 29 May to 5 June.

It's part of Marvel's #FindYourPower campaign, which will see approximately 3,000 'superheroes' around the world take part in a virtual 'race to the Avengers and back', covering a total of 50,000km.

The UK Superhero Series has run a number of similar challenges, including the 'At Home Winter Wonderwheel' and the 'At Home Superhero Challenge', and this summer have launched their new challenge to encourage those with disabilities to 'find their own power'.

Sophia Warner, the founder of the Superhero Series, said that following the "tremendous response" to the Superhero events last year in Jersey, the organisation was "excited to partner again with Move More Jersey and to have the Government of Jersey's support to enable even more islanders to take part in this Superhero Series Find Your Power Challenge."

Participants have the option to set their own tracked challenge to take part, and can use any type of 'gadget or gismo' such as power chairs and adaptive bikes to complete their challenge.

Those taking part can also choose from a range of sensory challenges, such as popping bubbles and fun food tasting tests, and participants also have the opportunity to invent their own challenge which can be converted into kilometres towards their mission.

As well as making sure that the event is accessible to all disabled Islanders, Move More Jersey has also organised a program of disability friendly events throughout the week, including scheduled walks, cycling at their Cycle Without Limits centre and a variety of multi-sport activities.

Cirsty de Gruchy, Head of Move More Jersey, said that they hoped that events such as this will help to make a difference to the lives of the 14,000 islanders living with a disability.

Move More Jersey has 500 free spaces available to islanders who wish to take part. Each participant will receive a Super Race Pack containing a Marvel 'Find Your Power' medal, t-shirt and finish line tape to celebrate the end of the challenge in style.

"As we continue to deliver the Disability Strategy, it is important that disabled islanders feel included and are not discriminated against, and this is a brilliant initiative to help those islanders become more active in their lives. This year has been incredibly difficult for many, and I’d like to encourage all disabled islanders to ‘find their power’ and kickstart their sporting passions," Social Security Minister Deputy Judy Martin said.

Move More Jersey has encouraged any other groups on the island who may want to partner with them on this challenge to reach out to them, to provide participants with experiences that they otherwise may not have access to.
