Digital democracy for Jersey?

Monday 29 February 2016

The UK electorate can't yet do it online yet but one Jersey Deputy wants to see e-voting introduced for the 2018 elections.

Deputy Geoff Southern believes it would get more of us voting and wants the States to trial some systems that would allow us to register and vote online.

He thinks we're more likely to vote if we're given more ways to do so and says it will cost about £20,000 to research and trial a secure online voting system.

The Chief Minister has committed to spending more on e-government and digital initiatives to make the public sector more efficient.

In a proposal which will be debated by the Island's politicians in the coming months, Deputy Southern says: “What better way to demonstrate and to advertise to the world our commitment to digital innovation and e-government than to bring our election system into the 21st century?”

But it looks like Jersey’s Youth Parliament are one step ahead - they had online voting for their first elections earlier this month.

Some boroughs in the UK have introduced online voting in local elections but voters still have to go to the ballot box or post their votes in the general election.

In September 2014 the Political and Constitutional Reform Committee of the House of Commons published a report entitled “Voter engagement in the UK – Political and Constitutional Reform” that called for a package of reforms to electoral arrangements by 2020 to make it easier to vote and increase turnout.
