Would you ditch your motor for a muffin?

Thursday 21 September 2023

Government officials the world over are racking their brains on how to create behaviour change in the population that will help drive forward their net-zero and green transport ambitions – and Jersey's appear to have come up with a solution: muffins.

To mark World Car-Free Day tomorrow, the Government is inviting islanders to walk or cycle to work to be in with the chance of winning one of 100 free breakfast muffins.

Tokens for the muffins will be hidden along walking and cycling routes into town in an effort to incentivise people to leave the heated car seats behind, and instead go green and embrace the great outdoors – even if it means arriving to work with windswept hair or a soggy suit jacket.

Islanders who manage to get their hands on one of these exclusive paper tokens before the wind whisks them away can redeem them at the Climate Jersey trailer in the Royal Square between 07:30 to 10:00.

Among the 100 hidden tokens, three will be redeemable for an £80 Acorn Enterprises voucher which can be used towards the purchase of a repurposed bike.

The Government's Active Travel Engagement Officer, Ell Hopton said: “There are 100 tokens to be found and we hope that by offering a small incentive to ditch the car for a day, islanders will be encouraged to think about other ways they can travel.

"There are so many additional benefits to travelling actively for our daily journeys, including improved health and wellbeing, cleaner air, and less congestion on the roads."

No detail has been provided on the muffins themselves, however, leaving islanders to ponder... will they be made from local ingredients or vegan? Will they come in plastic packaging that will later be unceremoniously dumped into the same landfill overflowing with 70p plastic bags and Ministers' plans to agree on a new hospital?

Cycle or walk to work tomorrow, and you might find out...
