Celebration for comrades-in-arms

Saturday 28 June 2014

Islanders are being invited to join members of the Armed Forces, veterans and cadets and celebrate Armed Forces Day this weekend.

The party is being organised by 7 Overseas (Jersey) Squadron who are running a drill competition between the cadet forces and a “Gun Run” between the Island’s uniformed youth organisations at the event today in the field opposite the Airport Garages in St Brelade.

The party is part of a nationwide celebration of the Armed Forces and many of the Island’s Ex-Services associations and cadet forces will be there.

Training Officer Flight Lieutenant Leighton Jenkins RAFVR(T) says he hopes former force personnel will turn up to reminisce with their old comrades.

He said: “It’s a really important day as an Island, to thank people either historically who have made the ultimate sacrifice, retired veterans who have given service to the Island and to the crown, current personnel that are on operations at the moment and for the actual Island.

“We’ve got very strong cadet forces who do a fantastic job either practically or for themselves learning lifelong skills – communications, resourcefulness, team leadership which are really important skills and which will stand them in good stead for the future.”

There will be live music from Les Quennevais School Band and Beaulieu De La Salle School Band and a curry lunch in aid of the Royal British Legion.

With a face painter at the party you might even get done up like a soldier in combat.

The event starts at 10 am and finishes at 5 pm.
