Inclusive surf centre on charity's agenda for summer

Saturday 02 January 2021

A dedicated centre where islanders of all abilities can get help catching some therapeutic waves could be set up this summer, if a local surf charity gets its way.

Healing Waves enables individuals to access the ocean in a safe way to participate in water sport activities, despite any neurological or physical disabilities.

Ocean Therapy is offered through guided surf, paddle and flow sessions, using water sports as a vessel to help participants to gain more self-confidence and communication skills, whilst also providing therapy and respite. Loved ones and carers are also encouraged to participate in sessions, helping to strengthen bonds and provide a well-deserved day of relaxation, fun and respite for all.

Like many other charities in 2020, fundraising has proven a huge challenge for Healing Waves, with many aspirational ideas for events in 2020 having to be put on the backburner for now.

Express spoke to Healing Waves co-founders Max Wiltshire and Dominic Booth to discuss their 2021 plans to create an inclusive surf centre where the charity can be run from...

The adaptive surf centre will give the charity a much-needed home and dry space to run sessions from, store large quantities of specialist equipment and deliver training to their volunteer team. For the Healing Waves Athletes and their families, it will be a safe space to meet, change and sign-in to sessions whilst giving all a sense of belonging and empowerment.

Dom explained: “We will be looking to involve our Athletes in the whole process from the choosing of their equipment, set up and finally wash down at the end of each session. It is envisioned that we will also deliver water safety awareness to our Athletes increasing their understanding of the ocean. This centre will ultimately provide our Athletes with the space to reflect upon each session and socialise over a warm drink, especially during adverse weather in colder months."

Both Max and Dom voiced their belief that this surf centre will provide a chance to showcase Jersey’s desire for inclusiveness and equality, by making Le Braye into a centre of excellence with hopes of becoming globally renowned.

Healing Waves also want to work alongside BeachAbility and Enable in 2021, to create disabled changing facilities in both Le Braye and St. Brelade's bays.

Max added: “Beachside changing facilities are something that has been much needed on the island for some time now to ensure that any individual with additional needs can have the comfort and dignity they deserve when changing. These facilities will allow for our beautiful coastline to be enjoyed by all Jersey residents and visitors alike whilst having memorable experiences.”

It is hoped that the builds will be ready for Summer 2021, and Healing Waves are asking for anyone who thinks they can help in any way with the projects to contact them via email: healingwavesoceantherapy@gmail.com.
