Firefighters, St Mary's Honorary police and the JSPCA were called out to Grève De L’Ecq late last night on a difficult cliff rescue.
Just before 10 pm two fishermen called for help after spotting a sheep that looked like it had fallen from the cliff and was stuck precariously on rocks on the east side of the bay.
The police and firefighters sought the advice of the JSPCA to work out the best rescue plan, putting a rope around the sheep’s horns and securing it to a canvas carrying sheet.
The sheep was then lowered from the rock ledge down to the beach with a ladder that was then used as a makeshift stretcher to carry it to the slipway where it was reunited with the farmer.
Crew Commander Andy Gallie said: “Animal rescues are frequently challenging and this incident was no exception. Fortunately, a little improvisation coupled with good teamwork from all involved, resulted in a successful resolution to this incident.”
The farmer took his sheep off to get checked out by a vet. It’s expected to make a full recovery after its ordeal although it might be feeling a little sheepish today.
