Plastic bag pennies mean pounds for eco projects

Sunday 06 September 2020

A local supermarket is inviting green charities and causes to dip into an 'Eco Fund' generated by the sales of plastic carrier bags.

The Co-operative's funding pot offers donations to local environmental charities, groups and individuals who have ideas about how to protect Jersey's environment, and has donated £320,000 in its 12-year history.

It was launched when the Co-op introduced a charge on plastic carrier bags. In July, the Co-op increased its Bag for Life charge from 10p to 15p per bag, meaning the Co-op can now dedicate more funds to environmental causes.

Last year, the Eco Fund provided more than £11,000 to 11 different local charity projects.

Among them was Jersey Trees for Life, which received £1,000 enabling them to plant 5,000 small hedgerows in order to create a "living corridor".

One of the key factors when choosing applicants, the Society said, is the wide-reaching impact that the project will have on the Island's "sustainable heritage", whether that be through education, the marine environment or even in an Islander's back garden.

The fund was initially due to open to applications in July, but was delayed due to the pandemic.

Co-op CEO Mark Cox said that, despite delays, the Society "felt it was important that we continued with the campaign to give all those good causes protecting our local environment the opportunity to apply for some funding."

He continued: "As a responsible retailer we are always looking at ways to reduce our impact on the environment around us and it’s fantastic to be able to run our Eco fund, which helps support other projects across the Channel Islands.

"I would encourage anyone who has an idea to make our islands more environmentally friendly to apply for the fund, whether you are school, charity, community organisation, or an individual."

Those wishing to apply this year can do so online until Wednesday 30 September by clicking HERE.
