Students debate role of the Constables

Young voters are being invited to have their say on the future of Jersey’s Constables before going to the polls this week.

A group of students have organised a debate tomorrow night ahead of the referendum on Wednesday when Islanders will be asked for a simple yes or no vote to decide whether Constables should automatically remain members of the States.

Sitting politicians from opposing sides have been invited along to share their views at the debate at Jersey College for Girls which one of the organisers hopes will encourage more young people to use their vote.

JCG student and Team Rally Jersey Youth founder Amy Vatcher said: “Many adults think that young people aren’t interested in politics. However, I think it’s time to prove them wrong.

“This is why my colleagues and I have organised this debate. We want to get young people involved in voicing and arguing their opinions, especially as so many of us now have the vote! Most importantly, we want to get young people engaged with politics, empowering them to make a difference to our island’s future if they wish.”

If Island votes “Yes” in the Referendum on Wednesday Constables elected by their parish will automatically become States members.

If the vote is “No” – All parish Constables who are appointed will also have to stand for election to the States.
