Could students turn the tide on marine energy?

A team of university students are presenting their report today on whether Jersey could harvest the power of the sea.

Dr Peter Connor and the students from the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Exeter have been assessing the Island’s resources and the potential for renewable energy both onshore and offshore.

They are exploring how new technology could connect to the grid and finding out whether Islanders want tidal turbines in Jersey’s waters.

Dr Louise Magris from the Environment department said: “We’re delighted that Dr Connor has chosen to lead a research project here and I hope that the final outputs of the student-led work will provide us with very useful information in respect of our offshore renewable energy resources.”

Dr Connor is a senior lecturer in renewable energy policy and has been working on a number of projects for the European Community.

Jersey is part of the Channel Islands Renewable Energy Group working with west Normandy and exploring ways of harvesting Channel waters.
