Engineers make light work of a tall order

There was nothing like cabin fever for engineers working on a hefty job on the roads last weekend.

It might have been a tall order for them to lift five heavy containers up over the trees at Westmount Gardens but they made light work of it!

Jayen Ltd had the job of craning Jersey Electricity’s new £17m substation site cabins into the site part way up the steep slope that will be used as a canteen and toilet block for the next two years while the work is being done.

The crane used 42 metres of its 50-metre jib to hoist the steel cabins and stair cases from their transporter on La Route de St Aubin, over the trees and into position on the west side of the site works.

The road was closed off on Sunday morning to all traffic apart from the buses but the work was all completed ahead of schedule.

Jayen Contracts Director Steve Elliott said: “That’s just how we like it! It’s all gone very well.”

Jayen will continue to clear the old quarry site, remove the old retaining wall and construct a new wall that will blend into the landscape and protect the new substation below.

French contractors INEO have the job of building the actual substation to secure existing and new supplies to the north and west of St Helier. It should be finished early in 2018 with the landscaping and footpaths completed that Autumn.
